- Problem Abstract: radio display goes crazy
- Reported By: Jose Liano (lcordova@caribe.net)
- Year: 1997
- Model: GT
- Mileage: 12,000
- Applicable Options: single CD radio with equalizer
- Solution: Segments on the radio's LCD would blink on and off randomly -making the display illegible. The dealer would not replace the radio, and would only offer to remove the radio and ship it to the manufacturer for repair.(I would be left without a radio for an indefinite amount of time!) This was unacceptable to me, so I tried to fix it myself. I opened up the radio and inspected it. A large yellow capacitor on the main (bottom) pc board had its leads cut too long -they touched the metal enclosure of the radio (grounded) causing an internal short. Using a small flat screwdriver I bent the leads sideways so they no longer touched the metal. The problem was gone.
- Cost: $0
- Other: The dealer initially blamed the battery, so they replaced it (needlessly) -a few months later the new battery shorted and burned the alternator... "good job!"
